The High Trestle Bridge

The High Trestle Trail is a 25 mile long bike path in Iowa, and it includes the High Trestle Bridge, of course. This used to be an active railroad bridge, but the rails have been moved and the bridge is now a biking and walking bridge. The trail is famous for it's 13-story and 1/2 mile long bridge over the Des Moines River, located between Madrid and Woodward in Boone County. At each end of the ½ mile long bridge are four 42’ tall artistic towers. The dark bands represent geologic coal veins found in area limestone deposits. There are 41 steel “frames” over the bridge represent support cribs within an historic coal mine, which light up blue in the evening. It's a great place for photos. This was taken during a warmer evening last winter. During the summer the bridge is more crowded and it's harder to get a shot like this.
