Geronimo was the leader of the Chiricahua Apache. Born in 1829, he led his people in resistance to white colonization until finally surrendering in 1886. The U.S. government pushed the Apache people out of territory when gold was discovered in the Southwest. The government reneged on land agreements to give white settlers preferential lands. Geronimo died in 1909. This flag is hung on the side of a convenience store on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota
