  • Mount Rushmore is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It was once land that belonged to the Lakota Sioux people, given to them in a U.S. treaty in 1868. As usual with the American government, they reneged on the treaty was gold was discover in the hills, forcing the Sioux to relinquish the territory. The government then carved the faces of four presidents into the hills as one remaining insult. Work began in 1927 and ended in 1941.

  • Geronimo was the leader of the Chiricahua Apache. Born in 1829, he led his people in resistance to white colonization until finally surrendering in 1886. The U.S. government pushed the Apache people out of territory when gold was discovered in the Southwest. The government reneged on land agreements to give white settlers preferential lands. Geronimo died in 1909. This flag is hung on the side of a convenience store on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota

  • Crazy Horse was a Lakota leader, known to be fearless and daring. He was the leader of resistance when the U.S. government ordered all Lakota people onto reservations in 1876. He fought again Custer, Crook, and others. He teamed up with Sitting Bull to counterattack Custer's Seventh Cavalry. He surrendered in 1877 after constant military harassment, and was eventually killed by a soldier by bayonet. No photographs of Crazy Horse exist.
